Apprenticeship in Norway

Norwegian apprenticeship is part of vocational upper secondary education, called videregående opplæring. It prepares people for practical occupations such as health work, construction, technology, transport, food, and crafts. A common path is known as the 2+2 model. The learner normally spends the first two years mainly in school and the next two years as an apprentice in a workplace, although some programmes use different arrangements. The school part gives basic general knowledge, safety training, and occupational skills. The workplace part gives supervised practice, real tasks, and experience with the routines of a trade. A company that trains apprentices is called a lærebedrift. The agreement between the apprentice and the training system is a lærekontrakt, and the county authority normally has an important role in approving and following the training. At the end, the apprentice usually takes a practical trade examination. A passed trade leads to a fagbrev, while some traditional crafts use the term svennebrev. Apprentices are workers in training and normally receive pay during the workplace period. Their duties, supervision, learning goals, and progress should be clear to both the apprentice and the company. Adults may use other routes, including work-based assessment, adapted upper secondary education, or a competence assessment based on earlier experience. The exact route depends on the person’s age, education, work history, and chosen trade. Apprenticeship can lead directly to employment, further vocational study, or additional qualifications. Its limits are that places depend on suitable training companies, practical work can be demanding, and Norwegian language skills are often important for safety and teamwork.
