Employment in Norway

In Norway, an employment relationship is called an arbeidsforhold. The employee works for an arbeidsgiver and receives wages under agreed conditions. Most employees should receive a written arbeidsavtale, or employment contract. It normally describes the job, workplace, working time, pay, notice rules, and other important conditions. Norwegian workplaces follow rules for working environment and safety, often called arbeidsmiljø or HMS. These rules cover safe work, reasonable working conditions, rest, and protection from unfair treatment. Employees usually receive a payslip that shows gross pay, tax deductions, and other deductions. A skattekort tells the employer how much tax to withhold, while a personal identity number or D-number helps connect the worker to public services. Holiday pay is commonly called feriepenger. It is normally earned through work and paid according to the holiday system, so it is important to understand the difference between ordinary wages and holiday pay. Many workplaces have a tariffavtale, which is a collective agreement between an employer and a trade union. An employee may also join a fagforening, especially when help with pay, contracts, or workplace disputes is useful. A normal start includes accepting the contract, giving the employer correct personal and bank details, arranging a tax card, and learning the workplace routines.
