Taxes in Norway

Tax is money collected by the public authorities from income, purchases, property, and some other activities. In Norway, tax revenue supports many shared services and public systems. Employees normally have tax deducted from pay by the employer. The amount is connected to a skattekort, or tax deduction card, which reflects information about expected income and relevant circumstances. After the income year, many people receive a skattemelding, or tax return. It summarises information known to the tax authority, but the taxpayer must check that income, loans, assets, and deductions are correct. A final tax assessment compares what was paid during the year with what was actually due. This can result in money to pay or money returned, depending on the individual situation. Some people must make forskuddsskatt, or advance tax payments, especially when income is not taxed through ordinary payroll withholding. Self-employed people and business owners need to plan for this carefully. MVA, or merverdiavgift, is value-added tax on many goods and services. It is especially important for businesses that sell taxable goods or services, while private consumers usually pay it as part of the price. Tax rules can differ for employees, freelancers, self-employed people, companies, students, property owners, investors, and people moving across borders. The same payment may have a different treatment depending on its purpose and documentation. Good tax records include payslips, invoices, receipts, loan information, investment statements, and documents supporting deductions. Keep records in an orderly way and separate personal and business expenses where relevant. Start by checking your tax card and tax return, reporting changes in your situation, and asking the Norwegian Tax Administration or a qualified adviser when the issue is complex. Never assume that an old tax estimate remains correct after your income or residence changes.
