Languages in Oman

Arabic is Oman’s official language and is used in government, public life, media, and much of the school system. Modern Standard Arabic is used in formal writing and official communication. People commonly speak local varieties of Arabic in daily conversation. Omani Arabic can sound different from Arabic varieties in other countries, but learners can begin with widely understood basic Arabic. English has a strong practical role in Oman. It is common in higher education, private-sector work, tourism, aviation, technology, medicine, and communication with people from different language backgrounds. Oman is also home to long-established regional and community languages. Mehri and Jibbali, also called Shehret, are especially associated with southern Oman, while Baluchi is used in some Omani communities. Swahili, Urdu, Hindi, Malayalam, Bengali, and other languages may be spoken in families and workplaces because Oman has long connections with East Africa and South Asia. The strength of each language depends on the community and place. A child may hear one language at home, learn Arabic at school, and use English for study or work. This can be an advantage, but children need patient support so that one language is not treated as a problem. Language ability includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing. A person may be strong in conversation but need more practice with formal writing, or understand English at work but feel less confident speaking it. The most useful learning plan starts with real situations. Learn greetings, directions, numbers, forms, safety words, and job-related phrases, then practise them with trusted speakers.
