Environmental conditions in Paraguay result from the interaction between nature and built surroundings. Natural areas support biodiversity, regulate water and provide resources, while streets, public spaces, sanitation, waste collection, air quality, noise, greenery, safety and accessibility shape everyday living conditions. Protected areas form part of the national conservation system SINASIP, which includes public, private and autonomous-entity reserves. Its 2025–2030 strategic plan identifies 128 protected areas covering approximately 15% of Paraguay's territory. Activities in a protected area depend on its category, management plan, current instructions and any required authorization. Responsibility is divided among each Municipalidad, national authorities and local or private service providers. The municipality, service area and exact address determine which rules, services and reporting channels apply. Land use, water availability, biodiversity protection and economic activity can therefore create different environmental concerns in the same country.
Environment in Paraguay
Paraguay's environment combines natural systems such as forests, wetlands, rivers, savannas and wildlife with the surroundings people experience in daily life. Agriculture, livestock, forestry, water management, settlement, waste services and conservation affect these systems and also depend on them. Conditions and responsibilities vary between urban and rural areas, protected areas and different municipalities.
