Arrival in Peru

When arriving in Peru, most international visitors first pass immigration, called Migraciones, then collect luggage and pass through customs. The same basic order applies at airports, although smaller border crossings and land routes may feel more informal or take longer. Carry a valid travel document and keep important travel details available, such as your accommodation address and onward plan. Immigration officers may ask simple questions about the purpose and length of the visit. Peru uses Spanish in official travel procedures, while English may be available in some tourist areas. Knowing a few Spanish words for passport, luggage, address, and taxi can make the first conversation easier. Lima is the main international gateway, but travelers also arrive through regional airports, land crossings, and ports. Distances can be large, and the coast, Andes, and Amazon have very different roads, climates, and travel times. After customs, travelers normally arrange a taxi, airport bus, local transport, or a pickup. In busy places, use an official transport desk, a prearranged service, or a clearly identified provider rather than accepting an unknown offer. Border and airport areas can be crowded, and bags and phones need normal attention. Keep copies of important documents separately, but keep the originals secure and accessible when officials need them. The first day is often about getting settled rather than seeing many sights. Drink water, rest after a long journey, and allow time to adjust to altitude if your destination is in the Andes.
