Nature in Peru

Peru has three broad natural regions: the Costa near the Pacific Ocean, the Sierra in the Andes, and the Selva in the Amazon basin. These regions contain many smaller ecosystems, each with different weather, soils, plants, and animals. The Costa is often dry because the Andes and ocean currents limit rainfall. It includes deserts, coastal valleys, beaches, wetlands, and marine areas. Rivers coming from the Andes make farming possible in many valleys. The Sierra contains high mountains, deep valleys, plateaus, glaciers, lakes, and puna grasslands. Queñua forests, wetlands called bofedales, and high-altitude lakes are important for water, animals, and local communities. The Selva includes lowland rainforest, cloud forest, rivers, oxbow lakes, and flooded forests. It has very high biodiversity, including many birds, mammals, insects, fish, trees, and medicinal plants. Peru’s nature is also part of daily life and culture. Communities use land, water, forests, fisheries, and native crops for food, work, medicine, building, and ceremonies. Traditional knowledge can help people understand seasons, soils, animals, and useful plants. Protected areas conserve important places and species. They may be national parks, reserves, sanctuaries, community-managed areas, or other forms of conservation. Protection can limit hunting, logging, mining, construction, or other activities, depending on the area. Nature in Peru faces pressure from habitat loss, pollution, fires, overfishing, illegal wildlife trade, climate change, and poorly planned development. Problems in one place can affect water, food, health, income, and nearby ecosystems. Good nature management combines conservation with the needs of people who live in or near natural areas. Useful approaches include restoring forests, protecting water sources, using land carefully, supporting sustainable farming and fishing, and respecting local participation. A first step is to identify the ecosystem, the local community, the important resources, and the main risks before planning an activity. Small actions such as reducing waste, saving water, avoiding wildlife purchases, and following protected-area rules can support wider conservation.
