Transport in Peru

In cities, transporte público includes buses, combis, shared vehicles, and in some places organized bus systems. A combi is a small or medium public minibus, while a colectivo is a shared vehicle that follows a route and may leave when enough passengers are ready. Taxis are common in towns and cities, but their organization varies. Some are booked through a formal service or app, while others are found on the street, so identify the vehicle and agree on the fare before the trip when no meter is used. Mototaxis are three-wheeled vehicles widely used in smaller towns and many Amazonian or rural areas. They are useful for short local journeys but offer less protection than a car during a crash. Long-distance buses connect many Peruvian cities and regions. Mountain roads can be winding, slow, and affected by weather, roadworks, or landslides, so a short map distance may still require a long journey. Domestic flights connect distant regions quickly, especially when roads are difficult. Airports may be far from the final destination, and baggage, weather, and local transfers still affect the total journey. Boats are essential on some Amazon routes, while trains serve particular corridors and tourist routes. These forms of transport are regional rather than a single nationwide network. Traffic can be heavy, especially in large cities, and pedestrian behavior may feel different from what visitors expect. Use crossings when available, watch every direction, and keep children close near roads.
