Labor market in Papua New Guinea

Papua New Guinea's labor market combines formal employment with extensive subsistence agriculture, family work, small trade, fishing and informal services. Agriculture, forestry and fisheries support many livelihoods, while services account for 53.7% and industry for 7.6% of employment in ILOSTAT's 2022 figures. Low recorded unemployment does not mean that sufficient formal work is available, because many people enter low-paid or irregular activities when formal jobs are scarce.
