Traditions in Papua New Guinea

Traditions in Papua New Guinea are inherited and changing practices shaped by more than 800 languages and cultural groups across 22 provinces. Families, clans and communities pass on ceremonies, stories, music, food practices, clothing, crafts and customary exchanges, but no single national tradition system applies everywhere. Local terms include pasin tumbuna for ancestral ways, singsing for public cultural performance, bilas for ceremonial dress and adornment, and wantok for a kinship and social network. Access, meaning and permission depend on the province, community, language group, clan and cultural custodian.
