Communication in Poland

Polish, called język polski, is the main language of public life in Poland. English is often useful in larger cities and international settings, but it should not be assumed in every office, shop, or neighbourhood. Polish pronunciation and grammar can take time, so begin with practical phrases rather than trying to speak perfectly. A greeting, a polite request, a number, an address, and a sentence saying you do not understand are especially useful. Pan and Pani are polite forms of address for a man and a woman. First names and informal ty are common among friends, but a polite form is safer with officials, older people, service staff, and new contacts. Phone calls, text messages, email, messaging apps, and letters all have a place in daily life. Important arrangements should include the date, address, names, price or task, and what happens next. Official communication may use Polish abbreviations, formal wording, and deadlines. Save letters, confirmations, and appointment details, and ask for help if a message affects housing, health, work, school, or residence. A translator, trusted bilingual person, or language service can reduce mistakes. Do not let another person control your passwords, identity documents, or banking approvals merely because they speak better Polish. Communication styles differ between families, workplaces, generations, and regions. A short direct message is not always unfriendly, and silence may mean that the person did not understand or is busy. The main limits are poor translation, missing context, and unclear responsibility. Confirm important agreements in writing and repeat essential details before ending a call or meeting.
