Taxes in Poland

A tax is a compulsory payment to the public system. In Poland, taxes may concern income, business profit, purchases, property, inheritance, vehicles, and other defined activities. PIT, or podatek dochodowy od osób fizycznych, is the main personal income tax for individuals. It can apply to employment, contracts, business activity, rent, investments, and other income under different rules. CIT, or podatek dochodowy od osób prawnych, generally concerns the income of companies and certain other legal entities. A business must separate company records from personal spending and keep suitable accounting documents. VAT, called podatek od towarów i usług, is included in many prices of goods and services. Businesses may collect and account for VAT, while consumers usually pay it as part of the purchase price. Tax residence is important because it can affect which income must be reported in Poland. Cross-border work, foreign accounts, property, or investment income may require careful assessment. Employers or other payers may withhold advances for some types of income. This does not always remove the need for an annual return, corrections, records, or additional payment. Important Polish tax documents may include information from a payer, invoices, contracts, receipts, and records of business or investment activity. Keep documents long enough to support the relevant reporting and review period. Tax rules can differ by income source and change over time.
