Apprenticeship in South Korea

South Korea does not rely on a single apprenticeship system for all skilled occupations. Vocational education, employer training, and combined school-and-work programs perform many of the functions associated with apprenticeships elsewhere. Vocational high schools teach general subjects together with occupational skills. Specialized high schools focus on fields such as technology, business, agriculture, or services, while Meister high schools are designed around strong industry links and preparation for skilled employment. A typical route includes choosing an occupational field, applying to a school or training program, completing lessons and practical exercises, and gaining workplace experience. Learners may also prepare for a nationally recognized or industry-relevant certificate. Apprenticeship-style training can provide early work experience, technical skills, professional contacts, and a faster route into employment. It can suit people who learn well by doing and already have a reasonable idea of their preferred occupation. The quality and recognition of programs can vary. A narrow course may prepare someone for one job but offer less flexibility later, while weak workplace supervision can reduce the value of practical training. Before enrolling, learners should confirm who provides the training, what qualification is awarded, how much supervised practice is included, and whether graduates commonly enter the intended occupation.
