History in South Korea

South Korea’s history cannot be understood as beginning with the modern republic. People draw on a shared Korean past that includes ancient states, cultural exchange, conflict, and long periods of political organization on the peninsula. The Three Kingdoms of Goguryeo, Baekje, and Silla are central to common historical narratives. Later states, including Unified Silla, Balhae, and Goryeo, left political, religious, artistic, and linguistic legacies. The Joseon dynasty shaped institutions and everyday culture for centuries. Neo-Confucian ideas influenced education, government, family order, ritual, and social rank, while Hangul was created to make writing Korean more accessible. Korea later came under Japanese colonial rule. This period involved political control, exploitation, cultural suppression, resistance, and painful experiences that remain important in public memory and international relations. After liberation, competing political systems emerged in the north and south. The Korean War caused enormous destruction, separation, displacement, and loss, and the peninsula remained divided after the fighting stopped. South Korea then experienced authoritarian government alongside fast industrialization and urban growth. Large businesses, export production, education, and migration to cities transformed work, housing, and family life. Citizens, workers, students, journalists, religious communities, and opposition figures took part in movements for democracy. Their efforts helped establish competitive elections and stronger civil freedoms, although debates about power and justice continued. Modern South Korea combines historical traditions with a highly urban, technological, and globally connected society. Regional identities, family histories, popular culture, democratization, and the continuing division of Korea all shape how the past is discussed.
