A locuință is a home, an apartament is an apartment, and a casă is a house. In towns and cities, many apartments are in a bloc, a multi-unit residential building. Renting is commonly called închiriere, and the rent is chirie. A contract de închiriere should state the home, parties, rent, deposit, payment method, responsibilities, and how the arrangement can end. The landlord may be called proprietar or locator, while the tenant may be called chiriaș or locatar. Learn who is responsible for repairs, shared costs, and utility accounts. A deposit is often requested before moving in. Record the amount, purpose, and conditions for its return in writing. Utilities may include electricity, gas, water, heating, waste collection, and internet. In a bloc, some costs may be managed through an association of owners, called asociația de proprietari. An apartment building may have a scară, meaning entrance or stair section, and an intercom called an interfon. These details are important when receiving visitors or deliveries. Inspect walls, windows, locks, appliances, plumbing, heating, and furniture before moving in. Take dated photographs and write down meter readings. Neighbour relations matter in shared buildings. Noise, rubbish, pets, parking, repairs, and use of shared areas can create conflict if expectations are unclear. Housing quality and prices vary greatly between Bucharest, other cities, small towns, and villages. Never transfer money for a home you have not checked or for an agreement you do not understand.
