Employment in Russia

Employment in Russia is a formal relationship between a worker and an employer. The worker performs agreed duties, and the employer provides work, pay, and working conditions. The main document is the трудовой договор, which means employment contract. It normally identifies the parties, job function, place of work, pay arrangements, working schedule, and basic conditions. A worker may be hired for an indefinite period or for a fixed period when a lawful reason exists. The arrangement should match the real work, because an informal agreement can make it harder to prove pay, service, leave, or other rights. Common forms include full-time work, part-time work, remote work, temporary work, and work under a civil contract. A civil contract is not the same as employment and usually focuses on a result or service rather than an ongoing job under the employer’s direction. Hiring often includes an application, interviews, document checks, agreement on conditions, and signing the contract. The employer then records the start of work and gives instructions about duties, safety, and internal rules. Russian employment rules are based mainly on the Labor Code and related regulations. They cover working time, rest, annual leave, sick leave, wages, occupational safety, personal data, and protection from discrimination in employment. Pay is commonly transferred to a bank account, and formal employment normally involves payroll records and required social contributions. A worker should understand whether the stated amount is before or after deductions and how bonuses are calculated. Employment can end through resignation, agreement, expiry of a fixed term, or an employer decision allowed by law. The worker should keep the contract, payslips, notices, and other records in case a disagreement must be explained.
