Religion in Russia

The Russian Orthodox Church is the largest and most visible religious tradition in much of Russia. Orthodox churches, icons, monasteries, fasting periods, feast days, and services influence cultural life even when people practice only occasionally. Islam is deeply rooted in several parts of Russia, especially in the Volga region and the North Caucasus, and Muslim communities live throughout the country. Mosques, family customs, food practices, and religious holidays are important parts of local life. Buddhism has longstanding communities in parts of southern Siberia and other areas. Buddhist temples, teachers, rituals, and cultural traditions form an important part of regional identity. Judaism and other Christian traditions also have a history in Russia. Their communities may be found in larger cities and in regions with particular historical connections. Many people describe themselves as nonreligious, culturally religious, or uncertain. A person may celebrate a religious holiday as a family or cultural event without regular worship. Religious life is shaped by both personal belief and public institutions. A church, mosque, synagogue, or temple may serve as a place of worship, education, charity, memory, and community support. Religious customs can affect food, clothing, marriage, funerals, names, weekly routines, and the treatment of sacred spaces. The same holiday may be practiced differently by families and regions. Russia's religious diversity is connected with ethnic and regional diversity, but religion and ethnicity are not identical. Do not assume that a person's language, appearance, or place of origin proves their belief. The practical limits include uneven knowledge, stereotypes, political sensitivity, and the danger of treating a tradition as a museum object. Good understanding comes from asking respectfully and observing local rules.
