Environment in Rwanda

Rwanda’s environment combines natural systems such as mountain rainforests, volcanoes, savannas, lakes, rivers, wetlands and peatlands with the surroundings where people live and work. These systems support wildlife, water storage, soil protection, health, safety and economic activity. Environmental decisions therefore involve both protected nature and everyday conditions such as air, noise, water, green space, infrastructure and land-use change.

Surroundings

Surroundings in Rwanda cover the directly experienced residential and everyday environment, including infrastructure, air, noise, water, green space, safety, public participation and spatial change. Conditions differ between Kigali, the six secondary cities, other districts and rural areas, and no single nationwide office handles the whole subject. Public responsibilities are distributed among REMA, MININFRA, the City of Kigali and districts, RWB, WASAC, RURA, MINEMA and other bodies.
