Health in Saint Lucia

The Ministry of Health, Wellness and Nutrition steers, regulates and delivers public health services in Saint Lucia. The system includes 33 Community Wellness Centres, which provide first-contact care close to communities, usually within about 3 miles. Services include vaccinations, antenatal care, family planning, child and adolescent care, men's health, nutrition, physical-activity support, dental care, hearing services, mental-health support and screening for conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure and diabetic eye disease. Community Health Nurses may also provide home visits. Locations and opening hours should be checked before attendance because some centres may be temporarily closed or redirected during SMART rehabilitation work. Community Wellness Centres provide the usual starting point for routine health concerns, but urgent symptoms should be directed to an appropriate urgent-care or hospital service. Dr. Betty Wells Urban Polyclinic provides medical clinics, urgent care, minor-wound treatment, dressing services and a pharmacy, with an official operating rollout from 8:00 to 24:00 including weekends and public holidays. Gros Islet, Dennery, Soufriere and Vieux-Fort serve as strategic urgent or emergency locations; opening arrangements can change, and Soufriere has also operated around the clock during a holiday notice. Polyclinics and district hospitals in Gros Islet, Dennery, Soufriere and Dr. Betty Wells provide the next level of care. Millennium Heights Medical Complex and Owen King EU Hospital serve the north, while St. Jude Hospital serves the south. Tapion Hospital is a private provider. These hospitals handle emergency and complex treatment, including childbirth, surgery and dialysis, and patients may be transferred abroad or to another provider when a service is not available locally. St. Jude's site was transferred to the Ministry in November 2025; physiotherapy and administration were commissioned, while broader clinical activation was still being built in 2026. Patients should confirm current capacity before relying on a particular service. Vaccinations are generally available without charge at Community Wellness Centres. The National Immunization Programme includes HPV vaccination aimed at Grade 6 pupils, generally around ages 11 to 12. Antenatal care, cervical-cancer screening and prostate-cancer screening were listed in primary healthcare without patient charges in 2025. Breast-cancer screening and snake-bite management have also been expanded. Mental-health care begins where appropriate at a Community Wellness Centre, followed by assessment by a District Medical Officer and referral to the National Mental Wellness Centre or the Community Mental Health Team. Planned follow-up may take place through regional visits by a multidisciplinary team. The confidential 24-hour service at 203 is free for emotional crisis and suicidal distress; an acute emergency requires an Emergency Room. Medicines are regulated under the Pharmacy Act, Cap. 11.21. They fall into controlled, over-the-counter, pharmacist-assisted and prescription-only categories. Controlled and prescription-only medicines require an authorised prescription and dispensing by a licensed pharmacy. Controlled medicines are generally supplied for no more than 28 days at a time, chronic prescriptions may remain valid for up to six months, and antibiotic prescriptions are valid for seven days. Primary healthcare is often free or less costly than private care, but Saint Lucia has no reliable single nationwide fee list for every service. Private care, services outside the documented public programmes and charges for non-residents may follow different tariffs. Follow-up can continue through chronic-disease clinics, referrals between wellness centres, polyclinics and hospitals, community mental-health services, home visits, physiotherapy at St. Jude and eye surgery follow-up through the National Eye Clinic. Patients should follow authorised prescriptions, observe medicine expiry and supply limits, attend scheduled follow-up and raise quality concerns with the responsible facility or health authority.
