Senegal's vocational and technical training system, known locally as Formation professionnelle et technique (FPT), combines several routes. Formal initial training takes place in accredited public or private vocational training centres, technical or vocational lycées, companies and other approved institutions. It combines practical work, general education and occupational specialisation. Work-based apprenticeship takes place in a company or workshop under a maître d’apprentissage, who provides guidance and practical training. Traditional apprenticeship remains largely informal and varies between workshops. Apprentissage rénové gives selected workshops and Maisons de l’Outil adapted curricula, trained masters and assessment leading towards certification. Some programmes also use modular training through the Office national de la Formation professionnelle (ONFP), while validation of acquired experience (VAE) can recognise competences gained through work or apprenticeship.
Apprenticeship in Senegal
Apprenticeship in Senegal provides practical training for a specific occupation through formal, non-formal or informal pathways. Options include accredited vocational training centres, technical schools, companies, workshops and structured programmes supported by public agencies. Training may lead to a national certificate, diploma or professional title, but completion does not guarantee employment.
