History in Senegal

The area of present-day Senegal was connected to major West African networks long before European rule. Communities along the Senegal River, the coast and the inland savannah formed political societies linked by trade, farming, migration and religious exchange. States such as Takrur, Jolof, Waalo, Cayor, Futa Toro and the Sine-Saloum kingdoms influenced different parts of the territory at different times. Islam spread through trade, scholars and political alliances, while local religious practices and social structures continued alongside it. From the fifteenth century, Portuguese and later other European traders established coastal contacts. The Atlantic trade connected Senegal to wider commercial networks and included the forced transportation of enslaved people. Gorée Island became a major symbol of this history, although historians distinguish between its symbolic role and the much broader regional systems of trade and enslavement. French expansion strengthened during the nineteenth century. France incorporated Senegal into its colonial empire, reorganized administration, controlled economic activity and recruited soldiers, including the Senegalese Tirailleurs. Dakar became an important administrative and commercial center in French West Africa. Colonial education, citizenship arrangements and political representation developed unevenly. The Four Communes of Senegal—Dakar, Gorée, Rufisque and Saint-Louis—held a distinct legal and political position within the colonial system, but this did not create equal rights for the wider population. Senegal became independent on 4 April 1960 and later formed the independent Republic of Senegal under Léopold Sédar Senghor. Historical interpretation depends on written records, oral traditions, archaeology, material remains and colonial archives. These sources do not always tell the same story or give equal attention to every community. Museums, memorial sites, schools, public ceremonies and debates about figures such as Lat Dior and resistance to colonial conquest shape public memory. Understanding Senegal’s history therefore requires attention to regional differences, competing accounts and the consequences that earlier political and economic systems still have today.
