In Serbia, prijateljstvo means friendship, while drugarstvo often describes friendly companionship, especially among peers, classmates, teammates, or long-time companions. Druženje means spending social time together and can happen with friends or a wider group. Friendships may begin at school, university, work, in a neighborhood, through sport, or through mutual friends. Repeated contact is often more important than one impressive meeting. Social time can include coffee, walks, meals, home visits, celebrations, travel, sports, music, or relaxed conversation. Some groups meet frequently, while others stay close through occasional messages and dependable help. A close Serbian friendship may include emotional support and practical assistance. People may help with transport, moving, family events, introductions, or everyday problems, but support should remain voluntary and mutual. Friendship can connect with family and community life. A friend may be invited to a home or celebration, yet invitations and traditions differ between households and do not remove the need to ask about comfort and privacy. Good friendship needs trust, honesty, respect, and room for different opinions. Problems often arise when one person expects constant availability, uses favors as debt, or avoids speaking clearly about hurt feelings. Some friendships last from childhood, while others grow after migration, study, work, or a change of city. Distance can be managed through planned calls, visits, shared activities, and honest expectations. A good first step is to choose one shared activity, attend regularly, and make one clear invitation. Watch for reciprocity: both people should show interest, make time, and respect limits.
