School in Serbia

Children in Serbia commonly begin with preschool education and then enter osnovna škola, the local term for primary school. Primary education is organised in one continuous school stage and normally lasts eight grades. The first part of primary school focuses on basic literacy, numeracy, the natural and social world, arts, physical education, and classroom habits. Later grades introduce more subject teachers and more specialised subjects. After primary school, pupils choose secondary education. A gimnazija provides broad general education and is often intended as preparation for higher education. Vocational secondary schools, called stručne škole, combine general subjects with professional knowledge and practical learning. Some programmes are more school-based, while others include stronger cooperation with employers through dual education. Admission to secondary school follows a national process based on completed primary education and required assessments. The details can change, so families should use the pupil’s school and official education offices for current instructions. A normal school day includes lessons, breaks, homework, tests, and communication between teachers and families. Schools may also offer clubs, competitions, additional support, and activities outside regular lessons. Important differences can exist between schools and municipalities. Class size, facilities, transport, language of instruction, inclusion support, and access to specialised activities may not be the same everywhere. Parents and pupils should look beyond the school name and compare the programme, commute, support services, atmosphere, workload, and later options. A good choice fits the child’s abilities, interests, health, and realistic daily routine.
