Languages in Singapore

Singapore has four official languages: English, Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil. Malay is the national language, while English is the main working language of government, education, business, and public communication. Most children in mainstream schools learn English together with a mother tongue language. The mother tongue subject is commonly Malay, Mandarin, or Tamil, depending on the learner's background and school arrangement. English helps people from different language communities study and work together. It is also the language most often used in formal notices, public services, higher education, and professional settings. Family language may be different from school language. A child may hear a heritage language at home, use English in class, and use a local informal style with friends. Singapore English includes formal Standard Singapore English and informal speech often called Singlish. Singlish can include words, rhythm, and sentence patterns influenced by local languages, but formal settings usually require clearer standard English. Malay, Mandarin, and Tamil are used in families, cultural life, media, community organisations, and religious settings. Their use differs between people, households, age groups, and communities. Language ability has several parts, including understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. A person may be strong in conversation but need more practice for formal writing or school examinations. New residents should learn the language needed for their immediate tasks first.
