Pets in Singapore

Pet ownership in Singapore is shaped by animal welfare rules, housing conditions, and the responsibilities of the keeper. You must provide food, water, shelter, exercise, medical care, and safe supervision. The national animal authority, commonly known as AVS, oversees important animal matters such as licensing, welfare, disease control, and bringing animals into Singapore. Requirements differ by species and by whether the animal is already in the country. Housing is a major part of pet planning. HDB flats, condominiums, rented homes, and landed houses can have different rules about animal types, numbers, size, shared spaces, and landlord approval. Dogs may need licensing and identification, while cats and other animals can have separate requirements. Check the current rules that apply to your animal before adoption, purchase, relocation, or breeding. Veterinary clinics provide vaccinations, examinations, treatment, surgery, and advice about parasites and nutrition. Singapore's heat, humidity, traffic, and dense living environment make preventive care especially important. Public behavior matters. Keep dogs under control where required, clean up waste, respect signs, and prevent animals from disturbing neighbors or wildlife. Adoption is available through shelters and welfare groups, while breeders and sellers may offer animals under different conditions. Meet the animal, ask for health information, and consider the long-term cost and time before committing.
