State in Singapore

Singapore is both a country and a city, so its national state covers the whole territory. It is a sovereign republic with a written Constitution that sets out the main institutions and powers of government. The President is the head of state and represents the country. The President is directly elected and has some independent constitutional powers, including a custodial role over important national reserves and key public appointments. The Prime Minister is the head of government. The Prime Minister normally leads the political party or group that can command a majority in Parliament and appoints ministers to form the Cabinet. Singapore has a single-chamber Parliament called Parliament. Members of Parliament debate laws, approve public spending, examine government policies, and represent citizens through elected constituencies. The Cabinet manages national policy and public administration. Ministries handle areas such as education, health, transport, housing, defence, foreign affairs, and social support, while statutory boards carry out many specialised public functions. The courts form the judiciary. Courts interpret and apply the law, decide disputes, hear criminal cases, and protect the proper use of legal procedures within the constitutional system. Singapore is a unitary state, not a federation. It has no separate state governments with their own constitutions, although local institutions such as town councils and community organisations manage specific neighbourhood or social functions. The Public Service supports the elected government by carrying out laws, delivering services, regulating activities, and planning for the long term. Residents usually experience the state through public agencies, schools, healthcare services, housing systems, transport services, and local community channels.
