Learning in Slovakia

The Slovak learning system covers different stages and goals rather than one single pathway. School education usually progresses from early childhood education to základná škola and then to general, vocational, or artistic secondary education. Apprenticeship is mainly organised through vocational secondary schools and employer-based practice; duálne vzdelávanie, or dual education, combines school lessons with workplace training, although not every vocational student belongs to a formal dual programme. Higher education is provided by universities and other vysoká škola institutions. Programmes may lead from bachelor-level study to master or engineering study, with doctoral study as an advanced research option. Language learning includes Slovak, which is the main official and school language, minority languages used in particular communities, and foreign languages such as English. Continuing education and upskilling include employer training, digital and language courses, professional programmes, and rekvalifikácia, meaning retraining for another occupation. The suitable pathway depends on the learner’s age, previous education, preferred language, intended occupation, need for workplace practice, and whether the goal is an initial qualification, an academic degree, improved job skills, or a career change.
