Pets in Slovenia

Pets in Slovenia are part of ordinary family life, and dogs and cats are the most common companion animals. Responsible ownership includes food, housing, exercise, prevention, identification, and planning for illness or travel. A veterinarian is called a veterinar, and a veterinary clinic is a veterinarska ambulanta. The veterinarian can advise on vaccinations, parasite control, sterilisation or castration, dental care, nutrition, and signs that require urgent treatment. Dogs and cats should have reliable identification and current health records. Microchipping, registration, vaccination records, and an EU pet passport may be relevant, especially when an animal travels across borders. A pet passport records identity and important health information for eligible travel. Travel rules can differ according to the destination, animal, and journey, so ask a veterinarian well before travelling. Dogs need safe walking arrangements, waste collection, and control around roads, children, livestock, and other animals. Public access can vary between parks, buildings, public transport, restaurants, and protected natural areas. Cats also need protection from traffic, disease, parasites, and accidental escape. Indoor cats need space, scratching areas, play, hiding places, and regular veterinary care. Animal shelters are often called zavetišče. They help abandoned or lost animals and may support adoption, temporary care, or advice, but they are not a substitute for planning before taking an animal. Housing, neighbours, travel, holidays, heat, snow, and emergency care all affect pet welfare. Before adopting or moving with a pet, check that the home, schedule, budget, and local rules can support the animal for its whole life.
