Apprenticeship in Spain

The closest Spanish equivalent to apprenticeship is Formación Profesional, usually shortened to FP. It prepares learners for specific occupations through organised teaching and practical experience. FP is offered at different levels, so the right entry point depends on previous education and the occupation sought. Programmes lead to named vocational qualifications rather than one general apprenticeship certificate. Training normally takes place through an authorised education or vocational centre and includes learning in a company. The balance and organisation of centre-based and workplace learning depend on the programme. Formación Profesional Dual, or dual FP, strengthens the shared training role of the centre and the company. It should not be assumed to work exactly like apprenticeship systems in Germany, Austria, or other countries. Workplace learning lets students practise real tasks, understand routines, and meet employers. Its educational purpose, supervision, assessment, and legal arrangement should be clear before it begins. A vocational qualification can support entry into skilled employment or progression to further education. Some professions may require additional recognition, registration, or other conditions beyond completing FP. Programmes are connected to occupational families, called familias profesionales. Comparing the curriculum and occupational outcomes is more useful than choosing only by a broad course name. Autonomous communities administer much of the provision, and arrangements may vary locally. Applicants should use the responsible regional education service and authorised centres to confirm the route available to them.
