Spain’s tax system has national rules alongside important regional and municipal elements. The Agencia Tributaria is the national tax administration, while regional and local bodies manage or participate in other taxes and charges. IRPF is the main personal income tax for individuals who fall within its scope. Employment income often has amounts withheld in advance, but withholding is only a prepayment and may not equal the final result. A declaración de la renta is the personal income-tax return commonly associated with IRPF. Whether a return is required and what it contains depend on the person’s income sources, residence, circumstances, and applicable rules. IVA is the consumption tax commonly included in prices for goods and services. Businesses and self-employed people may have duties involving invoices, collected tax, deductible tax, records, and periodic filings. Property can create taxes or charges when it is bought, owned, rented, inherited, donated, or sold. The responsible authority and treatment can depend on the transaction, property, municipality, and autonomous community. Tax residence is not the same as nationality or immigration status. Time spent in Spain, family and economic connections, and treaty rules can matter, especially when income or assets cross borders. Employees, autónomos, landlords, investors, pensioners, and company owners can have different reporting duties. Social-security contributions are separate from taxes even though both affect take-home income and business costs. Good records are fundamental because tax reporting relies on evidence. Contracts, invoices, payroll statements, bank records, property documents, investment reports, and previously filed returns should be kept in an organized form.
