Unemployment in Spain is called desempleo, while paro is common everyday language. A person may be unemployed without qualifying for a payment, because job-search status and financial protection are separate questions. Regional public employment services normally handle registration as a jobseeker, called inscripción como demandante de empleo. Registration can provide access to vacancies, guidance, training, and employment programs. The national public employment service, SEPE, has an important role in unemployment benefits. Regional services and SEPE perform related but different functions, so a person may need to deal with both. A contribution-based unemployment benefit is known as prestación contributiva por desempleo. Eligibility depends on the person's insured work history, the way work ended, availability for work, and other individual circumstances. Other unemployment assistance may exist for people who do not qualify for, or have exhausted, contribution-based protection. These forms of support use different personal, family, income, and activity conditions. A person receiving support generally has ongoing responsibilities. These may include remaining registered, renewing jobseeker status, reporting relevant changes, attending required appointments, and taking part in agreed job-search activities. Job loss usually produces important documents, such as the employer's termination communication, final settlement, employment certificate information, and recent payslips. These help establish why employment ended and whether records are correct. Unemployment support is temporary protection rather than a replacement for a work plan. Training, recognition of skills, language improvement, mobility, and broader applications can improve the route back into work.
