Apprenticeship in Sri Lanka

In Sri Lanka, apprenticeship belongs mainly to the technical and vocational education and training system, often called TVET. It prepares people for skilled work through practical learning. An apprentice learns by carrying out real or simulated tasks under supervision. Classroom or workshop lessons can support this experience with theory, safety rules, calculations, and communication skills. Training is available in areas such as construction, motor mechanics, electrical work, manufacturing, hospitality, information technology, beauty services, and crafts. NAITA, the National Apprentice and Industrial Training Authority, is closely associated with apprenticeship and industrial training. The Vocational Training Authority, technical colleges, and other recognized providers also form part of the wider vocational system. Many vocational qualifications use the National Vocational Qualification framework, commonly called NVQ. Its levels describe increasing occupational competence and can help learners progress from basic skills to advanced technical or supervisory learning. Entry routes differ by occupation and provider. Applicants commonly choose a trade, show their school records, complete an application, and may attend an interview or skills assessment before placement. The main strength of apprenticeship is learning work habits and usable skills in a real setting. It can also introduce learners to employers and make the move into paid work easier. Training quality, equipment, workplace supervision, and recognition can vary. Learners should confirm who provides the training, what qualification is awarded, and how much practical experience is included. Apprenticeship is not a lesser form of education. It is best suited to people who enjoy learning by doing and want a clear connection between training and an occupation.
