Elections in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka holds elections within a constitutional republic with universal adult voting. The Election Commission administers elections and works to protect lawful, impartial, and credible electoral processes. The presidential election chooses one person for the office of president. Voters select candidates directly, and the counting system can take ranked preferences into account when no candidate reaches the required majority at the first stage. Parliamentary elections choose members from electoral districts, with an additional national allocation forming part of the overall system. Proportional representation gives parties and independent groups seats broadly according to their vote shares under the applicable rules. In a parliamentary ballot, a voter normally selects a party or independent group and may also mark preferences for candidates on that list. The party or group choice affects seat allocation, while preference votes help decide which listed candidates receive those seats. Local government elections choose representatives for Municipal Councils, Urban Councils, and Pradeshiya Sabhas. Their electoral arrangements combine local representation with proportional elements, reflecting both neighbourhood choices and wider support. Provincial Council elections are the electoral route for selecting provincial representatives when such elections are held under the governing framework. They are distinct from elections for Parliament and local authorities, even though political parties may compete at every level. An eligible voter must appear on the electoral register for the relevant area. Registration is linked to ordinary residence and is maintained through an official process, so people should check their entry after moving or if their personal details change. Voting takes place by secret ballot at an assigned polling place. Officials check eligibility, issue the ballot, explain neutral procedural points when necessary, and secure ballots for counting under formal controls. Elections create peaceful opportunities to choose leaders, replace representatives, and express political priorities. Their value depends on informed participation, fair competition, correct ballot marking, respect for different opinions, and reliable institutions for complaints and results.
