Immigration law in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s immigration system is administered mainly through national immigration authorities, including the Department of Immigration and Emigration. Immigration status is based on official permission, not merely on a private invitation, job offer, marriage, property interest, or business plan. Short visits and longer residence are different legal situations. A visitor must stay within the permitted purpose and should not assume that permission to enter also allows employment, long-term study, or residence. Residence routes may exist for recognized purposes such as employment, study, family connection, investment, religious work, or other approved activities. Each route can require a local sponsor, supporting documents, and continuing compliance with its conditions. Foreign nationals who plan to work should check both immigration permission and any employment-related approval. Payment from abroad, remote work, volunteering, or helping a family business can still raise questions about whether an activity counts as work. Applications commonly rely on a valid passport, accurate forms, photographs, sponsor letters, civil records, educational or employment documents, and evidence of the stated purpose. Names, dates, and passport details should match across all documents. Permission is normally limited by its stated period and conditions. A person should seek an extension or change of status through the proper process before the existing permission ends or the person begins a different activity. Non-compliance can lead to questioning, refusal, cancellation, removal, or restrictions on future travel. Giving false information or using altered documents can create consequences beyond the immediate application. Immigration permission does not automatically create citizenship or permanent membership of Sri Lanka. Citizenship follows separate legal rules, and long residence or marriage alone should not be assumed to guarantee it.
