School in Sri Lanka normally develops knowledge and skills from primary education through secondary stages. Government schools form the main system, while private and international schools provide additional choices, and national examinations influence later education and work decisions. Apprenticeship combines supervised practical experience with instruction for a skilled occupation through an employer, a vocational institute or both. Higher education includes state universities, open and distance learning, and fee-charging non-state institutions; admission depends on the qualification, subject and provider, and recognition should be checked for the exact programme. Language learning supports participation in school, higher education, public services and employment. Sinhala and Tamil are the main local languages, while English often supports communication between language communities and access to study or professional opportunities. Upskilling includes workplace learning, vocational courses, professional training, distance study and short certificate programmes for improving existing abilities or preparing for different work. When comparing options, consider the intended outcome, entry requirements, teaching language, duration, practical content, total cost and recognition rather than relying only on the name of the institution or course.
