School in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has a broad school system in which government schools educate most children. School education is commonly provided in Sinhala or Tamil, while English is taught and is also used more extensively in some schools. Children begin with primary education and then move through secondary grades. The early years build literacy, numeracy, social skills, and general knowledge before subjects become more specialized. Government schools may be administered as national schools or through provincial authorities. Their facilities, subject choices, language streams, and extracurricular opportunities can differ by location. Private schools and international schools also operate in Sri Lanka. Some follow the national curriculum, while international schools may use foreign examination systems and usually charge fees. The national route includes the General Certificate of Education Ordinary Level, usually called GCE O/L, near the end of general secondary schooling. Results help determine the next educational route and possible subject choices. Students who continue toward university commonly enter the GCE Advanced Level stage, called GCE A/L. They study a selected subject stream, and their examination results are important for admission to state university programmes. School life also includes attendance, homework, assessments, sports, clubs, religious or cultural activities, and communication between families and teachers. Regular participation matters because learning builds across the year. Access to popular schools, preferred language streams, transport, and specialized subjects can be uneven. Families should compare the actual daily learning environment rather than judging a school only by its name. A suitable school is one where the child can attend safely, understand the teaching, receive support, and develop both knowledge and confidence. Examination success matters, but it is only one part of a healthy education.
