Costs in São Tomé and Príncipe

Use the dobra (Db, also written STN) for local budgeting. The Central Bank of São Tomé and Príncipe publishes a reference rate of EUR 1 = Db 24,500, but household budgets should use the actual exchange conditions relevant to each payment. The World Bank estimated average inflation at about 10.3% in 2025 and projected a decline toward about 5% by 2028, so older price examples can become unreliable. Food is usually the largest recurring expense. A 2017 household expenditure survey found that food represented about 51% of average household spending, while housing and health together represented about 28%. The figures are dated, but they show why food deserves separate tracking. Basic education is formally guided by the principles of free and compulsory education under Law No. 4/2018, but families can still pay for materials, uniforms, food, transport, private care and institution-specific charges. One cited CST Turbo +NET package provided 100 MB and 30 minutes per day for Db 12, while a monthly package provided 1,500 MB and 600 minutes for Db 180. Coverage and service quality can vary outside the main population centres, and the full current price lists of all providers should be checked directly. Leisure spending is mostly private and varies with location, season, tourism and imported inputs. Public spaces, beaches and community activities can provide lower-cost options, but prices are not standardized. A practical monthly budget should list food, rent or accommodation, electricity and water, transport, a healthcare reserve, education or family costs, communication and leisure. Review food prices at least monthly using the National Institute of Statistics consumer price index, then update utility tariffs and provider prices separately because the index does not replace a current household price list. Test the budget against higher food prices, a fuel or electricity increase, illness, the school year and travel between islands. Keep income, taxes, banking and debt calculations separate so that the living-cost estimate remains clear.
