Around 70% of Suriname's population lives in Paramaribo and the urban coastal zone, where markets, restaurants and food providers are most concentrated. Coastal agriculture supplies rice, bananas, root crops, vegetables, fish, poultry, cattle and pork. Nickerie is the country's main rice area. Coronie, Saramacca, Wanica, Para, Commewijne and Marowijne also contribute to coastal food production. In 2023, FAOSTAT recorded approximately 203,156 tonnes of paddy rice, 10,339 tonnes of vegetables and 6,169 tonnes of cassava. In Brokopondo, Sipaliwini and parts of Marowijne, Indigenous and Tribal communities combine local food production, fishing, forest and river products with supplies brought over longer and less reliable transport links. Households may also use gardens, community farming, local markets and informal food sellers. Formal access to agricultural or fishing support can involve LVV programmes, licences, cooperatives and credit. Suriname has no reliably documented nationwide entitlement to food vouchers or free meals. School food provision varies among school canteens, private sellers, NGOs and food brought from home. A fruit pilot launched in 2022 reached 42 vulnerable primary schools and generally provided bananas twice a week. The Bread Project, running from 2023, served about 4,000 breads per day with a spread and drink in 40 primary schools across five districts. School gardens operated in seven primary schools and one education centre in 2023, alongside teaching on food hygiene, nutrition and food growing. Everyday meals often follow a simple pattern of rice with a protein and vegetables or another side dish. Hindustani food includes roti, curry and bara. Javanese food includes saoto, nasi and bami. Creole and African food includes pom, moksi alesi, heri-heri and pindasup. Chinese-Surinamese food includes Tjauw Min and tjap-tjoi. Indigenous and local cooking uses cassava, root crops, fish and forest or river products. Pom combines pomtajer with chicken and spices. Saoto is a Javanese chicken soup commonly served with bean sprouts, egg and crisp toppings. Heri-heri combines salted fish with banana, cassava or sweet potato. Bara and baka bana are common snacks. Restaurants, warungs (small eateries), markets, street-food sellers and caterers are especially numerous in Paramaribo and the coastal zone. Family and religious celebrations such as Keti Koti, Holi/Phagwa and Divali may feature particular dishes, but Suriname has no officially designated single national meal. Suriname's National Dietary Guidelines and Food Pyramid were launched by the Ministry of Health with FAO and BOG in December 2022. They recommend varied meals containing all food groups, sufficient water, less salt, sugar and fat, and regular movement. Nutrition advice belongs to food choices; diagnosis and treatment of illness belong to health services. The 2022 estimate for overweight or obesity among people aged 15 and over was 58.1%, which makes practical food choices relevant to the country's non-communicable disease burden. Food safety uses a divided system that is still developing. The Wet NIVS of 2021, Staatsblad 2021 no. 19, established the Nationaal Instituut voor Voedselveiligheid Suriname and assigns it a national food-safety role, but the transfer of responsibilities is gradual. BOG, the Bureau voor Openbare Gezondheidszorg, continues hygiene and inspection work. LVV, the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries, covers food supply, agriculture, fisheries, aquaculture, agro-industry and exports. SSB checks standards and labels. A food business remains primarily responsible for the safety of the food it sells. Licensed food businesses may need batch codes, at least monthly BOG checks, an Approval Certificate and medical examinations for staff at least once a year. Meat sales require veterinary approval. Basic controls include hand hygiene, running water, pest control, protective work clothing, safe waste handling and suitable storage. Bottled-water production has additional microbiological and chemical requirements, including a pH range of 6.8 to 8.0. Fish processing and sales require a cold chain, with some products kept frozen below -18°C. Labels should normally state the product name, manufacturer, importer or distributor and contact details, net quantity, ingredients, shelf life, storage conditions and origin. SSB's label process allows a non-compliant label to be reported within five weeks after payment, with correction expected within six weeks. Evidence for uniform nationwide formalisation of every household or small-scale food seller is limited, so formal licensing and inspection requirements should not be assumed to apply identically to informal sales. Consumers can report price or quality concerns through EZOTI's SRD Check service or other government reporting channels. Food prices are stated in Surinamese dollars (SRD) and can change sharply with season, region, transport costs, imports and exchange-rate movements. EZOTI's SRD Check provides an official comparison of basic-goods prices by product and shop and accepts price or quality complaints. ABS, the General Bureau of Statistics, measures a consumer price index covering 316 goods and services through about 630 price points in Paramaribo and Wanica, Nickerie and Wageningen, Coronie and Saramacca, Commewijne and Para. ABS releases the index monthly. Its October 2025 release recorded a total consumer-price increase of 11.9% compared with October 2024. These figures describe price movement, not a reliable nationwide standard cost for a meal. Paramaribo and Wanica generally offer the broadest choice of food providers, while regional availability and prices should not be assumed to match the capital. Food production is exposed to sea-level rise, salt intrusion, flooding, heavy rainfall, erosion and heat, especially on the coastal plain. Responses include efficient irrigation, rainwater storage, resilient crop varieties, greenhouse or other protected cultivation, soil-health monitoring and agroecological biological inputs. More than 90% of Suriname's territory is forest, while most commercial food production is concentrated near the coast. Fisheries use registered boats, and vessel-monitoring systems are mandatory for trawl and line fishing. Indigenous and Tribal pineapple production includes an ongoing bio-factory project for biofertiliser and biorepellents. A 2025 collateral facility is intended to improve credit access for Indigenous and Tribal farmers who lack traditional forms of security. Food businesses also need to follow waste separation, recycling and chemical-handling conditions set through BOG and NIMOS requirements.
