History in Suriname

Suriname's history includes Indigenous settlement, Dutch colonial rule, plantation slavery, contract labor, independence and periods of military rule and political violence. Archaeological evidence points to Indigenous settlement from around 3000 BCE, followed by societies including the Arawak and Carib. Suriname became independent from the Netherlands on 25 November 1975 and has since developed through constitutional reform, elections and contested historical memories.
