History in Sweden

The earliest history of the area now called Sweden includes hunter-gatherers, farming communities, metalworking, trade, and changing settlement patterns. Archaeological remains show that different communities lived in the region long before a unified Swedish state existed. The Viking Age is remembered for travel, trade, craft, warfare, and contact across the Baltic Sea and beyond. The word Viking describes activities and networks rather than one single people or culture. During the medieval period, Christianity became influential, towns and institutions developed, and royal power grew. The Swedish kingdom gradually became more organised, although borders and political relationships changed over time. Sweden later became a major power around the Baltic Sea. This period brought military expansion and international influence, but it also placed heavy demands on people and resources. From the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, political reforms, population change, farming developments, and industrialisation transformed society. People moved increasingly to towns, and new forms of work and education appeared. The twentieth century brought large changes in democracy, labour, housing, education, health care, and social security. The modern welfare state developed through political decisions, public institutions, employers, and organised labour. Swedish history also includes the experiences of the Sámi and national minorities, migration, social inequality, and debates about the country’s international role. These experiences are not always represented equally in older historical stories. History in Sweden is learned through schools, museums, archives, monuments, family stories, and public discussion. A broad view compares different perspectives and separates well-supported knowledge from legends or simplified national images.
