Professions in Sweden

A profession or occupation is a yrke, and the plural is yrken. Swedish job titles may differ from titles used in another country, even when the work is similar. Some occupations are regulated, which means that a person may need a recognised qualification, authorisation, or professional licence. In healthcare, this may be called legitimation, while other fields use different approval systems. For non-regulated work, employers usually assess education, practical experience, references, language, and work samples. The employer decides whether the profile fits the position. Foreign education and experience may need assessment or validation, often described as validering. Swedish education and vocational routes can include universities, colleges, and Yrkeshögskolan, which focuses strongly on work-related skills. A Swedish application commonly uses a CV, a personligt brev, and references called referenser. The CV shows relevant experience, while the letter explains why the applicant fits the role. Many professions have their own words, certificates, safety routines, and career steps. Learning the vocabulary of the chosen field is often as useful as learning general Swedish. Career choices can change over time through short courses, workplace learning, recognition of prior learning, and movement between related occupations. A realistic first role can provide local references and a path toward the next level.
