Settling in Switzerland

When settling in, the municipality where you live is an important first point of contact. It can tell you which registration and documents are required for your situation. Switzerland has a federal structure. The Confederation, cantons and municipalities share responsibilities, so procedures and responsible offices may depend on where you live. Many steps require identity, residence, family, employment or education documents. Organized originals and copies make conversations with authorities and other offices easier. After moving in, several practical arrangements usually follow. These include ensuring that you can receive mail, arranging health insurance, opening a bank account, setting up a telephone, learning about transport and, depending on the household, arranging school or childcare. The local language is an important key. German, French, Italian and Romansh are spoken in Switzerland, with the place where you live determining which language predominates in everyday life. Written messages from authorities or insurers should not be left unattended. If you do not understand a letter, ask early for an explanation you can understand. Contacts often develop slowly through repeated encounters. Courses, clubs, school, work and the neighborhood offer reliable opportunities for this. Settling in is not a single visit to an authority but a process. A short list of open tasks, contacts and completed steps provides an overview.
