Continuing education generally builds on schooling, vocational training, work experience or personal knowledge. It can serve professional, language, general or personal goals. In Switzerland, options include short courses, workplace training, language courses, programs and longer courses of study. Teaching may take place in person, online or in a blended format. Career-oriented continuing education teaches or refreshes skills for the world of work. It can support a job change, greater responsibility or adaptation to new ways of working. Higher professional education is a distinctive part of the Swiss education system. It includes federal examinations and programs at higher education institutions for professionals (höhere Fachschulen), aimed at experienced professionals and subject to regulated requirements. Universities and other higher education institutions also offer continuing education for people with suitable prior education and experience. Such programs differ from regular degree programs and do not automatically lead to the same qualifications. Labels such as course confirmation, certificate, diploma or federal qualification do not mean the same thing. The value of a program depends on its learning objective, recognition in the desired occupational field and the provider issuing it. Continuing education takes time and energy and often costs money. Employers may support it, but the extent and conditions should be agreed in writing before it begins. Continuing education creates opportunities, but guarantees neither a particular job nor higher income. A realistic choice brings together personal goals, prerequisites, relevance to the labor market and available time.
