Exchange and mobility semesters in higher education in Switzerland

An exchange can take place through a higher education agreement with a partner institution or as a self-organized stay. When choosing, the host institution’s study offerings, the right timing, the duration of the stay, the language of instruction and the semester calendars matter. Being named as a partner institution guarantees neither an exchange place nor subsequent credit recognition. In a partner exchange, the process usually begins with an application to the home institution; after selection, nomination and an application to the host institution may follow. Admission by the host institution remains a separate step. For recognition of credits under the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) earned abroad, the planned courses are checked in advance for how well they fit the Swiss study program. This system is used to compare the intended study workload. A learning agreement documents the planned credit recognition, but replaces neither successful course completion nor the final decision by the home institution. The mobility budget includes fees, accommodation, living expenses, travel and possible additional costs; grants are considered secure only after binding confirmation. In addition, entry, insurance, accommodation and enrolment at the host institution must be organized according to the requirements of the participating institutions and responsible authorities. Changes to courses or the duration of the stay must be coordinated again because they may affect credit recognition, financing and administrative procedures.
