Nature in Switzerland

Nature includes living things, landscapes, and the relationships between them. In Switzerland, differences in elevation, soils, and climatic conditions shape a wide variety of habitats. Important natural areas include forests, meadows, fields, wetlands, floodplains, lakes, rivers, alpine grasslands, and rocky high-elevation areas. Small areas such as hedgerows, dry-stone walls, ponds, and nature-friendly gardens can also provide valuable habitats. Biodiversity means diversity within species, between species, and among habitats. This diversity supports pollination, fertile soils, clean water, and nature’s ability to adapt to change. Nature conservation in Switzerland is shared across several levels. The federal government and cantons set frameworks and carry out protection tasks, municipalities shape their local areas, and property owners or land managers are responsible for specific sites. Protected areas can preserve rare species, sensitive habitats, or distinctive landscapes. Rules vary by area, so visitors must follow local notices, stay on marked paths, and observe local restrictions. Forests provide habitats, places for recreation, sources of timber, and, in many locations, protection from natural hazards. These functions need to be considered together, so forest use and management do not look the same everywhere. People can experience many natural areas, but should cause as little disturbance as possible. Staying on paths, keeping dogs under control, taking litter away, and not feeding wild animals are simple ground rules. Nature conservation can protect species, make recreation possible, and help landscapes become more resilient. However, it cannot prevent every change and often requires balancing protection, use, safety, and property rights.
