Pets in Switzerland

A pet is a long-term responsibility. It needs suitable food, exercise or enrichment, care, medical attention and reliable supervision. Needs vary greatly depending on the animal species. Dogs, cats, birds, fish and small pets each require suitable spaces, social contact and specialist knowledge. Certain animals are subject to rules on identification, registration or notification. The municipality, canton, veterinary practice or responsible data office can explain what is required in the specific case. People who rent their home should check the rental agreement and house rules. Keeping animals may be permitted, require consent or be restricted because of the species or number of animals. Dog owners must keep their dog under control and show consideration for people, other animals, agriculture and nature. Local rules may concern leashes, dog zones and the removal of faeces. Veterinary preventive care helps detect illnesses early. A veterinary practice can advise on vaccinations, parasites, identification, nutrition and age-appropriate care. Travel or moving across the border may require special documents and health requirements. These must be clarified with the responsible authorities before travelling. Emergencies and absences should also be part of the planning. A suitable caregiver should know the animal, its habits and the contact details of the veterinary practice.
