Public transport (ÖV) is often used as a short term for public transport in Switzerland. Rail, bus, PostBus (PostAuto), tram, boat and local mountain railways are coordinated with one another in many places. The German, French and Italian abbreviations (SBB, CFF und FFS) are used for the same Swiss Federal Railways (Schweizerischen Bundesbahnen). In addition, numerous regional and local transport companies operate. Before travelling, you generally need a valid ticket for the route, time, zone or selected offer. Some connections also require a reservation or a special surcharge. Timetables show the departure, platform or stop, transfers and arrival. With tight connections, you should consider the route between stopping points and possible changes. When walking or cycling, traffic rules and duties of consideration apply. Lighting, being visible and adapting your speed to the surroundings increase safety. Anyone driving a car must observe the driving licence, vehicle, insurance, signage and local parking rules. Winter conditions and mountain roads require additional preparation. On vehicles and at stops, people getting off are usually allowed to pass first. Luggage, pushchairs and bicycles must not block paths or doors. In the event of a disruption, displays, announcements and staff can help. Planning enough time and knowing an alternative connection helps you remain able to act.
