Paid employment means working for an employer under agreed conditions. An employment contract records the job, pay, working time, leave and termination rules. Normal working time is up to 40 hours per week, and the statutory minimum wage is 1,300 TJS from 1 September 2026. Employers organize work, pay wages and social contributions, keep employment records and provide safe working conditions. People without work can register with the Agency for Labour and Employment of Population or its local offices to seek vacancies, career advice, training, public-work opportunities and, when eligible, unemployment benefits. Registered figures do not cover every jobseeker because many people do not register with the state agency. Tajikistan’s 2025 labor force survey counted 3,018,773 people aged 15 to 75 in the labor force, and 71.3% lived in rural areas; agriculture and labor migration strongly influence available work. Professional routes include vocational education, higher education, short courses, retraining and recognition of existing skills. Business activity usually involves choosing an individual entrepreneur, dehkan farm or legal entity such as an LLC, registering through the state one-window service, entering the Unified State Register and meeting tax, accounting, reporting and permit requirements that depend on the activity and legal form.
