Religion in Tajikistan

Religion in Tajikistan is predominantly Muslim, with most Muslims following the Hanafi Sunni tradition and a smaller Ismaili Shia community concentrated in GBAO. Religious communities can operate formally after state registration, while worship, religious education, publications, buildings and public activities remain closely regulated. The legal framework recognizes freedom of belief but also imposes restrictions linked to public order, security, national culture and ceremonies.
