Housing in Tanzania

Housing in Tanzania covers renting, home ownership, self-building and recognized or informal ways of occupying land. Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar apply separate land and housing regimes, so the same document or procedure does not automatically work in both. Urban households rely more on private renting: 36.0% in urban areas and 44.4% in Dar es Salaam rented privately in 2022, while 75.9% of rural households owned their homes. A safe housing decision depends on the provider’s authority, the occupancy document, the written agreement and the availability of water, sanitation, electricity and sound structural conditions.
